After putting the computer into my Shopping Cart, ToshibaDirect made me go through 4 pages of recommended accessories for the Tecra M7. One of the accessories was the carrying case which I returned in October because it didn't fit. At the time, they made some comment about me selecting the case from their site from a non-authorized list of accessories, but they still took the return.

Well, the other day, my wife lost the power tip to the car charger which I also purchased from the ToshibaDirect's recommended list of accessories. To clarify, these are FOUR pages that I had to go through before I could check out. These recommended accessories were specifically tied to the Tecra M7 purchase. I thought I was getting good products when I originally made the purchase.

ToshibaDirect resold the car charger from a company called Targus. To replace the power tip, I called Targus and found out that NONE of their power supply products were certified to work on the Tecra M7! Whoa... That's really bad news! If I'm using an uncertified power supply with the Tecra, then I could be voiding the warranty if something goes wrong with the computer. So now I'm off to ToshibaDirect again and I hear the same line... You purchased a product that wasn't intended for the Tecra. I SO WISH I had a printout of those 4 pages now! And the M7 is no where on ToshibaDirect anymore. I guess the computer has been discontinued only after 5 months on the market.

I hate ToshibaDirect. I am not thinking highly of Toshiba either. I'm really scared of the day when I have to ask for repairs for this thing. They'll probably say... "The extended warranty you purchased wasn't recommended for the Tecra M7."

Can't fiigure out how to open this tablet!

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

As I have previously mentioned, I come from the Apple Macintosh world. I'm use to things being intuitive. When I first worked with this TabletPC, I could not figure out how to open it! I was on the phone to Toshiba when it magically opened. After a while, I found the open button. It isn't that difficult so I figured I was just indoctrinated into a different kind of world.

Just the other day, my wife starts using the computer. First question she asks... How do you open the computer? Okay, so I'm not so indoctrinated; they hide the button in plain sight.

Now that we know how to open the computer, we find that it often magically opens anytime we carry it somewhere. The open button is so easy to hit that the computer stays unlatched most of the time during transport. This is where the Genius' at Apple come in. Their open button is recessed so the computer rarely opens when being carried. Second, the open button LOOKS like a button!

I don't know... Maybe I expect too much from a piece of equipment that worth only $2800.

Rob

The leather case sent with the 14" M7 doesn't fit!

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

My wife is actually using the computer now. Yeah! So I thought it was time to pull out the leather case purchased with the computer and guess what?!@#? It didn't fit the M7! ToshibaDirect insisted that this case is not intended for the M7 even though it was advertised as an accessory and sold on the same bill of sale as the M7. Fortunately, they gave me procedures to return the case to them. I've been looking for a decent case since and had no luck.

My dream portable computer case would be:
1) The case should be made with the idea of using the computer without removing the computer from the case.
2) Made of neoprene material with the top and bottom stiff. (I don't like a limp case that folds over and gets in the way when trying to hold the computer.)
3) The top of the case needs to rap around 360 degrees so that the screen can be exposed and written on while still held in the case; no sleeve computer cases.
4) The top of the case needs to have the bigger/longer sides holding the zipper coming down to bottom of the case which has shorter sides. You want the bottom sides to be shorter so that items coming out of the side of the computer have little resistance. You want the top side to be longer to create a "visor effect" on the screen when using the computer in a brightly lit location.
5) There needs to be elastic bands angled across each corner to hold the case around the computer when open.
6) The inside of the case should have a fabric that velcro can latch onto for those people who want to attach the computer to the bottem of the case but not use the elastic bands.
7) A close-able pouch across the inside top of the case would be nice to hold small items.
8) The edges of the case should be soft so that items that stick out of the side of the computer are not roughed-up or tight against the case.
9) The zipper should have an inside flap so that the zipper does not rub against items sticking out of the side of the computer or on the edges of the computer.
10) All cases I've seen has 2 pull-tabs on the zipper. I propose 4 pull-tabs on the zipper for those items that must stick out of the side of the computer.

These are my suggestions, but what do I know... I only use the products.

Rob

Wipe the HD clean and start over.

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

I know how to install all the software correctly, all the hardware seems to work, and the OS seems pretty stable. So I installed a BitTorrent client and started the download. The concept behind BitTorrent is pretty neat but my experience with downloading this image makes me want to stay away from it as much as possible. FOUR days after I started the download, I finally had my WindowsXPTablet.iso disk image! And guess what, the WindowsXPTablet.iso disk won't boot nor will it install on top of my "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Includes Service Pack 2" OS. Grrr!

So I BUY the WindowsXPTablet disk image from a site on the web for $25. Unlike BitTorrent, I get my disk image in hours instead of days. (It nice to have a one-to-one download.) Unforunately, I had to extract the extracting software that un-rars the file which is again encoding the disk image as 30+ files. (And I thought the Macintosh had a lot of decoding issues...) About 3 hours later, the CD is finally made. It boots the TabletPC! And I run into file errors all along the way. Grrr! Here's a link to the kinds of issues I was having:
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-506372.php

Luckily, I found another disk image on BitTorrent named "Microsoft_WindowsXP_Tablet_PC_Edition_2005 and Media Center Edition 2005.rar". After another three days of downloading, and more extracting the extracting software to un-rar the 30+ image files, this CD won't boot either but it does provide for a RAMDisk boot methodology and it installs without error! Yeah!

Unfortunately, "Microsoft_WindowsXP_Tablet_PC_Edition_2005 and Media Center Edition 2005.rar" does not pass the stupid Genuine Software test with the serial numbers provided with the download. I'd perfer to use my Windows serial number from the bottom of the TabletPC but this number doesn't work with "Microsoft_WindowsXP_Tablet_PC_Edition_2005 and Media Center Edition 2005.rar" disk image.

Rob

Incompatibility with Toshiba SATA and 3rd party SATA drives?

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

It turns out that booting a PC is one of the most difficult things to do. I can only boot from the internal hard drive and with the internal hard drive OS active, it can't be erased nor reinstalled.

I got a second SATA internal hard drive made by Seagate to be used as a OS test drive. Although it worked most of the time, I would get hard drive glitches everyonce in a while. My gut says that there is something incompatible between the Seagate drive and the Toshiba SATA interface. The Seagate drive was the ONLY portable hard drive to choose from at the store. Tablet PC software was no where to be found on the computer after the OS install. Microsoft Tablet PC Support and Toshiba Technical Support does not know how to get the Tablet PC software installed nor do they know there's a Windows OS CD for Tablets. new to Windows. I've always been a Mac guy. I can create and maintain a Macintosh OS, made for the desktop, that will bomb less than 3 times during the year with normal use. I've been told that Windows is nortorously unstable and my wife's desktop Windows OS rarely stays running for more than 4 days without bombing.

Looking at the OS installed on this M7, I can't figure out what Toshiba engineers were thinking. (I know, I shouldn't second-guess the "experts.") There is so much software installed on this computer that it is actually SLOW! It takes 3 minutes for everything to load into memory. Then, I'm constantly bombarded by pop-up dialog boxes and sounds for, what I consider, useless software. (Who needs or could hear an MP3 player when different software is constantly beeping at you.)

I LIKE to redo my computer's OS. I never leave a Macintosh factory installed OS in place. Although I'm not real knowledgeable about Windows, all this crappy software makes a real strong case to redo the OS. Problem is, do I really want to learn this much about Windows and will the gain be reasonable?

Rob

The computer bombs coming out of hibernation with Toshiba's OS.

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

While looking around the computer, I'm noticing that the computer bombs quite often. They say that bombing is the nature of Windows but this seems to be a bit too often. After 2 hours, I've narrowed the problem down to bombing when coming out of hiberation. After another 2 hours of research on the web, I find that other Toshiba customer's are having the same problem. Here's the link to the thread:
http://hardware.mcse.ms/message322756.html

Around 4 am, I find than article on Toshiba's support page about this problem. Unfortunately, I can't update the thread above because "I don't have permission to do that"... Here's what I was going to say:

Issue: If the computer is placed into the Standby or Hibernation state by closing the display lid, and then the computer's display panel automatically turns off, the display panel may not turn back on again when the mouse is moved, or the touchpad is touched, or a key is pressed.

The Monitor Power OFF setting in the Toshiba Power Saver utility controls when the display is automatically turned off. Once the display is turned off, either moving the mouse, touching the touchpad, or pressing a key on the keyboard should turn it back on again.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soid=1461853&BV_SessionID=@@@@1127026448.1158135784@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceaddikljjledcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0

After installing this patch, the computer seems to hiberate and wake correctly.

Rob

My critique of the M7 hardware.

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

When I first started looking for a TabletPC, I really considered a Slate computer. They should be the lightest of all portables and with Bluetooth built-in, it shouldn't have to have a keyboard, modem, printer, nor speakers. These are all devices that you use (well, maybe speakers excluded) while at a fixed location. If you really need a modem, use a CDMA card from your wireless phone service or connect to the Internet via your Bluetooth phone. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a current Slate computer that seems acceptable. So I settled with the M7 mainly because the M4, it's predecessor, has such good consumer reviews.

I absolutely love how the pen is used to interact with the computer. Believe it or not, I don't have ANY complaints about the Microsoft software shipped with the computer. I am very impressed with the "handwriting to text"; it gets about 1 out of 100 words wrong when reading my bad handwriting.

The keyboard seems fine. No complains here.

I give the pen an overall B grade. The pen holder in the computer seems to be a little close to the bottom of the computer and makes it hard to grasp the pen once it has been partially ejected. The actual pen is long enough to hold it and not be bothered by clip at the top. There is a button on the side of the pen that seems to get in the way and unexpectedly pushed; all Tablet pens have this button so I guess this is a universal problem.

Since this computer is intended to be highly mobile, the DVD drive is excessive weight. I will probably take the drive out of the computer when it goes on road with my wife. However, Toshiba should have provided an easy method to remove the DVD drive and provided an insert to cover the drive bay.

The screen is very nice. The hand glides across smoothly as you write on the screen. In the house, the screen is easy to see. Quite a few of my wife's patients don't have electricity so they sit on their porch all day to stay cool. I'm curious to know how well the screen can be seen sitting outside with indirect sunlight.

I don't know why this annoys me but the latch on the computer, when in Tablet mode, doesn't seem to be tight. I often find that the top unlatches too easily either by itself or because the button is too accessible. Also, the male end of the latch rarely goes directly into the female latch; instead, the male always bounces off the edge and sides into the female latch. It's just annoying but not a real problem.

I ordered a secondary battery for the TablePC, PA3510U TOSHIBA SLICE EXPANSION 6CELL. I expected to just swap out batteries when one ran down. Instead, this battery attaches to the bottom of the computer and makes the computer tilt an an angle. It adds about a pound to the computer and makes the whole computer not sit comfortably in the arm. I think you would also have to remove the battery to dock the computer, but I didn't buy a dock so don't hold me to this. My suggestion is that Toshiba should have made a bay where the DVD drive could be removed and an extra battery inserted. (Note: ToshibaDirect is swapping the Expansion Slice for a battery that fits in the battery bay; and I'm paying the shipping.)

The one item I'm most displeased about is the trackpad and trackpad buttons. (This is probably a personal preference since I use Macintosh portables all day long...)

The buttons are set off about one quarter of an inch from the trackpad. I'm use to the button butting up against the trackpad so that the lip I feel with my thumb IS the button. It's gets frustrating to push the button median and not get a response from the computer. My wife will probably not care since she's not been accustomed to anything else.

My issue with the trackpad is that small movements are not noticed when I move my finger across the pad. If the pointer just missed a target zone by a few pixels, then I'm use to just rolling my finger a bit to move the mouse to the target. With the M7 trackpad, the pointer doesn't seem to move until my finger has travelled at LEAST an 1/8th of an inch. (The maximum seems to be about 3/4 of an inch and occurs only 2 or 3 times a day.) In that 1/8th of an inch, my mind tells my finger that it must move faster to get the point to respond, thus the pointer misses the target zone. OR, if I'm rolling my finger, the pointer begins to move only after my finger is fulling rotated and thus, I'm not yet in the target zone. Grrr...

So far, we're happy with the Tecra M7 (considering that we haven't had a chance to use any other TabletPC) and I'd recommend it to others.

The computer is still on my porch!

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

The computer is here and it boots!

That's all the time I have for this computer for now. The biggest waste of time for her job is collecting, sorting, and returning customer's charts to the office; basically, paperwork. I see that a minimum of 45 minutes a day can be saved by scanning her charts, putting them on a computer, and allowing it to do the sorting work.

I am not a fan of waiting for a computer or piece of technology to be released. I believe that if you wait, something else will come along and you won't every commit to the purchase; thus, you delay your time savings that the computer affords. Well, I originally identified a Gateway TabletPC CX200X so I waited for it's release. I don't remember the reason, but just before purchase, I didn't like something on the Gateway computer and decided to wait for the Toshiba Techra M7. Because of my waits, it been 7 months before the purchase actually occured.

Here's what I purchased:
Tecra M7-ST4013 Tablet PC - Toshiba Laptop
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2600 (2.16GHz, 2MB L2 Cache,
667MHz FSB), Genuine Windows® XP Tablet Edition 2005, 1024MB =
1024MBx1 DDR2 533MHz, 14.1" Diagonal WXGA+ Display (1440 x
900) with High Brightness and Wide View Angle, Intel® Graphics
Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB-128MB dynamically allocated shared
graphics memory, 40GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial-ATA), CD-RW/DVDROM
Multifunction drive, Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g),
Bluetooth (v.2.0) + EDR, 1 Year Standard Limited Warranty

Toshiba 3-Year SystemGuard + 2nd/3rd Year Extended Service Plan
Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops - 3 Year Recovery Service
Toshiba 14.1 inch 3-in-1 Tablet PC Leather Portfolio and Tablet Digital Pen Bundle
Targus Mobile 70 Universal Combo AC and Auto/Air Adapter
Toshiba Slice Expansion 6-Cell Li-Ion Battery Pack

Some comments about Toshiba's configuration process.
* There is no generic configuration with Bluetooth! This means that if this computer doesn't work out for her, I have to fork over $450 to return it to Toshiba. Toshiba will only take generic configurations as a return! With Bluetooth built-in to phones, cameras, PDAs, and printers, I can't imagine anyone purchasing a portable computer in today's environments without it.
* The Toshiba website wants you to purchase the 3-year, same as 1-year, warranty. If you purchase a SystemGuard warranty, be sure to deselect 3-year so your not ripped off.
* I chose to pay the higher price for 1 stick of RAM, 1024MBx1 DDR2 533MHz. I did this because the computer has only 2 RAM slots; if/when I chose to upgrade memory in the future, I won't have to throw away a memory stick.

The web site estimates that I'll receive the computer around 8/22/6. I'll be looking for it!

Rob

Posted to Technorati.com

<dc:subject>M7 Install</dc:subject>

Technorati Profile
